So at the start of May I opened the osu! website and a brand new newspost peaked my interest.
Lazer Grand Arena an official 1v1 tournament hosted by the osu! team done fully within the osu! lazer client.
LGA's qualifiers are done a bit differently compared to a normal tournament. Usually you would schedule a time to join a qualifier multiplayer lobby and then play through the list of maps with one try each in a row. In LGA they instead used the playlist feature and gave everyone a few days to go throuhg it along side a limited amount of retries only giving enough to play through the whole playlist once and then a few extra to fix a few more scores.
I would wind up placing #30 in the qualifiers. Overall I think most of my scores were okay but I kinda half-assed through it and I didn't properly practice all the beatmaps.
Due to my low seeding I would wind up getting seeded against seed #3 ASecretBox. For those that don't know he is a top 30 osu! player with a huge list of major tournament and has been apart of the Australian OWC for a few years now. So my goal wasn't to win this match since it would require a metorite hitting his house for that to happen so instead I decided to go to get at least 1-2 points off of him.
Going into the match I didn't feel to great. I banned the only flowaim map in the pool whilst Box decided to ban LM1 which was on an AR0 map using the depth mod which I believed I could potentially win on as it was reading.
His first pick was on HD2 which I believed I had a chance of holding a good combo on but all of a sudden I got very nervous and just kept shit missing everywhere. This caused me to get a pretty lackluster score barely above 500k and with awful accuracy.
Obviously after that I then immediately decided to pick NM2 which was an AR6 reading map in which I managed to win by a decent bit due to holding a pretty solid combo in comparison to Box but I my accuracy was kinda slacking.
Even though I won this pick I actually didn't get the point. See I made a very dumb mistake since this tournament doesn't follow a traditional 1v1 format. I'll just use the description the newspost gave.
The match itself is a best-of-five, with each point being played in "sets" of two maps each. The Red player (high seed) makes the first pick, following an A-B-B-A order for the remainder of the match. In practice, this means that players take turns first picking for each new set.
So TLDR: I didn't actually wind up getting any points off of ASecretBox but you know I still beat him on a map which in my heart means I won a point (copium).
I continued to get swept until the second to last map in which I managed to set a pretty solid score on DT3 where it got somewhat close up until the end until I missed, but I held a really nice combo.
For my last pick I did an incredibly dumb choice of picking HR2 which was the precision map. I didn't really practice it too much, but I normally due pretty solid on those maps and I was hopefully gambling on him getting a few misses. I ended up shaking off most of the notes and struggling to hold a combo whilst Box 1 missed.
And with that I got sweeped 0-3 but at least I managed to beat him on one map and I got one pretty solid score so I will take those. I am pretty happy I even qualified considering this is a pretty high level tournament and I haven't touched very many 1v1 tournaments.
I plan to play in more tournaments this summer season and I am hoping I can get into the 4 Digit World Cup United States team and if not I still have United States Cup and potentially any other tournaments I may join.
